Drone Operations Suspended after Accident

This past Saturday a BQM-74E targeting drone collided with the US Navy cruiser USS Chancellorsville, punching a hole in the side and giving two sailors minor burns.

As a result of this accident, the Navy has suspended all drone exercises until a cause for the accident can be found. These targeting drones are used to practice targeting and engaging aircraft and missiles with the ships radar, gun, and missile systems.

The last serious accident with targeting drones occurred over three years ago, on Feb. 10, 1983, when shrapnel and fuel from a successfully engaged drone caused damage and fire to the USS Atrim, as well as killing one civilian on board the ship.
