Iran Threatens US Naval Power in Gulf, and Builds a US Carrier

According to a report over at NavyTimes.com not only is Iran building a mock-up of a Nimitz-class aircraft carrier, but it would consider US aircraft carriers in the Persian Gulf a primary target in the event of a war.

These remarks come from Adm. Ali Fadavi, the head of the Revolutionary Guard's naval forces. According to the artice, Fadavi was quoted as saying: "The carriers are responsible for supplying America’s air power. So, it’s natural that we want to sink the carriers." Fadvi also said that the Revolutionary Guard has already carried out some attacks against mock American warships, and in one case took only 50 seconds to destroy the mock ship.

Cmdr. Jason Salata, a spokesman for the U.S. Navy’s 5th Fleet, based in Bahrain, was dismissive of the Iranian claims and of the Nimitz-class mock up. Cmdr. Salata stated: "Whatever Iran hopes to do with the mock-up, it is likely to have zero impact on U.S. Navy operations in the Gulf...Firing weapons at a stationary structure...is not a realistic representation of having the capability to target a 100,000-ton warship ... maneuvering at speeds in excess of 30 knots."
