Although there may be a peaceful resolution through the UN in the works, the Secretary of the Navy, Ray Mabus, was not backing down in a speech he gave to the National Defense University in Washington.
As reported in the NavyTimes.com article:
I guarantee you that if we are called upon to strike, we will strike hard and we will strike fast...as the president said last night, [the strike] will be targeted and it will degrade the Assad regime's capabilities.
Presence is what we do. It is who we are. We reassure our partners that we are there, and remind those who may wish our country and allies harm that we're never far away. That is American sea power.
Although he did warn that the current and potential future sequestration cuts (potentially arriving as soon as Oct. 1) could degrade or altogether prevent the Navy from future actions such as these.
