Sneak Peak at Blue Angel's 2017 Season!

Blue Angles 2017

If you can't wait for the airshow season to start up again, you're in luck today! While there is still about a month until the Blue Angels first show on March 11 (at the NAF El Centro Air Show in California) you can get a sneak preview of their winter practice right now!

The Aviationist has a
great article with some background on the Blue Angels and Youtuber Spencer Hughes has a look at one of their practice sessions:

Check out the video on Youtube for the full description, which includes a roster of the pilots as well as more detailed information about what you're seeing, but this video includes practices by the Diamond 4-ship flight, the Lead and Opposing Solos practice, and the Diamond and Solos practicing together.

It's also interesting to note that in this practice session the Blue Angels are flying two #7 jets. The #7 is a two-seater F/A-18D that is commonly used to carry press and celebrities for "ride-along" demonstration flights. It's unclear if maintenance is the reason for the use of the two #7 jets, but the F/A-18C's flown by the Blue Angels are among the oldest in use by military, and the Angels are transitioning to the F/A-18E Super Hornet in 2018.
