The decommissioned USS Saratoga (CV-60) is headed to a scrapyard in Texas - costing the US taxpayer 1 cent.
The Saratoga, one of four Forrestal-class carriers, was commissioned in 1956, served until 1994. She participated in many different conflicts; the 1962 Cuban Missle Crisis, the Vietnam War, Operation Desert Storm, and others.
The Saratoga, currently berthed at Naval Station Newport in Rhode Island, will head to Brownsville, Texas, sometime later this year to be dismantled by ESCO Marine. Although the Navy is only paying 1 cent to have the Saratoga scrapped, ESCO Marine will be able to keep all profits from the sale of the scrap metal.
